French translation [RA/GG]
I. [Falquet] En chantant, je
English translation [LP]
I. [Falquet] I want you to
tell me this in song, Lord Blacatz: if the Emperor is going to the
land where God was born, what do you think and what do you
intend to do about it? I want to report how things seem to you:
whether you are pleased to make the voyage or whether you prefer to
stay behind; for a little while ago the Countess of Provence said
you were merry and a singer for love of her.
Italian translation [lb]
I. [Falquet] Cantando voglio
cantate.

Versification: a7 a4 b5’ a8 a4 b5’ b5’ b5’ c7’ c7’ b5’ c7’ c7’ b6’ (Frank 104:1), -atz, -aire, -ensa; two coblas unissonans. Unicum. Note: The exchange of coblas was composed in Provence (vv. 26-27), some time between December 1220, when Beatrice, daughter of Thomas of Savoie, became Countess of Provence (see v. 12) through her marriage to Raimon-Berenguer V (1209-1235), and 28 June 1228, when Frederick II left on crusade (see v. 3). The date of c. 1227 agreed by previous scholars is most probably correct: see De Bartholomaeis, Poesie, II, p. 92 and «Osservazioni sulle poesie provenzali relative a Federico II», in Memorie della R. Accademia delle Scienze dell’Istituto di Bologna, classe di scienze morali, sezione Storica-Filosofica, 1, 6, 1911-1912, pp. 97-124, on p. 108; Arveiller-Gouiran, p. 123; and my note to BdT 156.11. Zenker (p. 25, also Arveiller-Gouiran, p. 123) suggests that Falquet has recently returned from the court of Provence (v. 12) and may be finding out Blacatz’s plans at the request of the Countess.
